Nebraska Rainwater Basin
I met Don Cox, a landowner who hosted Lone Juv (White-Black-White) and two other sub-adults on his property during spring migration for nearly two weeks. Don noted the birds’ activity every day, and family, friends, and neighbors came to see them from the county road. I saw them from a distance but wasn’t able to get usable photographs.
I walked the wetland with Don after the whoopers had moved on. He had ten pages of handwritten notes on their behaviors. Don is a strong Ducks Unlimited supporter and manages his land for waterfowl, marsh, and upland game.
Behind the Scenes
Mike met landowner Don Cox in the Rainwater Basin in Nebraska where three whooping cranes had stopped near Don’s property. The cranes prolonged their stay for two weeks to refuel for their flight north, onward to their mating grounds in Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Canada.
