I visited the crime scene at Tom Steed Reservoir, where five whoopers were illegally shot and left for dead in early December. One whooper survived but died in transport to a vet. Feathers from the dead remained, scattered like confetti in the scrub. A single male cardinal, red as blood, stood vigil the whole time I was there. It was a haunting place. Heartbreaking.
