Nebraska Platte River
Whooper family group of telemetry birds G/W, Y/G, Y/B/Y (chick banded in Aug Wood Buffalo) show up on Halloween at the Crane Trust along with a single unmarked whooper tagging along–possibly last year’s juvenile, now sub-adult because of heated competition between this bird and this year’s chick Y/B/Y. Between the evening and morning, biologists and I witness whoopers bathing in a river channel, hunting for fish, watching a mature bald eagle diving at a whooper and interactions with sandhill cranes on the roost. The day harkens back to a Halloween years ago when daughter Elsa was in grade school and said she wanted to go watch cranes on the Platte instead of trick-or-treating. I didn’t think we’d see any cranes at all (they don’t stop much on the Platte in the fall), but we saw a family of whoopers fly right by the north blind we were in at Rowe Sanctuary. Couldn’t believe it.
