Episode Extras
Long Winter’s Rest
Whooping cranes are making their journey south for the winter to stop at the Gulf Coast on their critical wintering habitat in and around Aransas National Wildlife Refuge near Rockport, Texas.
When they’re home for the winter, territorial displays ensue, birds continue piling in, and it’s time for them to feast.
Aransas National Wildife Refuge
Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is 115,000 acres of diverse habitat set aside for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife along the Texas Gulf Coast. Barrier islands offer off-shore protection and quiet roosting, and it’s known as the wintering home of the last wild flock of whooping cranes.
Abundant food found in the bay and mild winters make this an attractive spot to wildlife who utilize space far beyond the refuge, where increasing industrialization including energy, petrochemical, fishing, agriculture, tourism, and even aerospace continue to encroach on vital habitat.
The International Crane Foundation Gulf Coast Program conducts research and works with coastal communities, businesses, landowners, and other partners to manage and protect this fragile coastal ecosystem.
