Marcelin Wetland
About Marcelin Wetland
This camera is placed at crane’s-eye view on a wetland’s edge to capture the seasonal pulses of water, wildlife, and weather on a large prairie pothole wetland. Located near the village of Marcelin, Saskatchewan, this region is full of wetlands and lakes and is a key early stopover location for whooping cranes on fall migration after leaving their boreal forest nesting grounds in Wood Buffalo National Park. Some whoopers may stage here for several weeks in September and October, especially adults with new chicks in tow. The surrounding landscape is mostly in diverse row-crop agriculture interspersed with grasslands, wetlands and aspen parkland. Waste grain post-harvest provides reliable carbs to fuel the migration.
