Wood Buffalo Nest Husker Red

About Wood Buffalo Nest Husker Red

In 2023, this camera captured the daily rhythms of a whooping crane nest in the Klewi watershed of Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada’s Northwest Territories. The female of the nesting pair is a telemetry bird known by the photographer and a handful of scientists as “Husker Red”. It is believed this is the first time she has nested. She and her mate successfully hatched two chicks. Telemetry and personal accounts confirm the pair and one chick successfully made it to wintering grounds at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. In previous years, she wintered on the Lamar Peninsula, close to development. With her chick, they wintered in a remote location on Matagorda Island off the mainland.

*The nest cameras were installed with the permission and under the guidance of whooping crane scientists and associated entities.
