Wood Buffalo Nest Church
About Wood Buffalo Nest Church
This camera captured the daily rhythms of a whooping crane nest in the Bear Creek watershed of Wood Buffalo National Park, in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This is remote roadless wetland wilderness. The female whooper of the pair is marked with telemetry. Among the photographer, and a handful of scientists, she is known as “Church” and, along with her mate, has successfully raised at least three chicks in consecutive years since 2022 when this camera was installed. Church and her mate winter on conservation lands at Welder Flats along the Texas Gulf Coast.
*The nest cameras were installed with the permission and under the guidance of whooping crane scientists and associated entities.
